English Studies / Language Arts
First and second grade students will learn language arts through direct instruction from the teacher and application through written assignments and activities. Third through fifth grade students are introduced to English Grammar and begin learning composition using the Institute for Excellence in Writing's Structure and Style at level A. Junior high students continue their study of English Grammar and strengthen their writing skills using the methods of the Institute for Excellence in Writing. SFA instructors use content based IEW publications to incorporate writing instruction with the study of history, geography, and other content areas. (Level B) High school students will review grammar as necessary while they work through IEW curriculum correlated to their study in history at Level C. This year, students in upper high school grades may take a course in Rhetoric in the second semester. Placement Testing: All new students must take a reading comprehension test to be admitted into an SFA Language Arts class. Non-readers, age 5-7 will need to take a reading readiness test.
