Placement testing will be held in July for students entering SFA Academic classes for the 2010-2011 school year. Level 1 classes are for 5 - 8 year olds who are not yet reading independently. This includes pre-readers and beginning readers. Level 2 courses require proficiency in phonics and the ability to read chapter books at a 2nd grade level. This requirement applies to all but Math classes. Separate placement testing will be provided for placement in either Arithmetic I or II.
Introduction to Language Arts Level 1
This class is for students who are ready to learn to read and those who have begun to read but still need work in phonics. Students will review the letters and phonograms along with their sounds while they learn to spell and read words using only the sounds they've been taught. Beginners will complete three books from Memoria Press, First Start Reading A, B, and C, which cover all the consonants, short vowels, and common two-letter consonant digraphs. More advanced Level 1 students will review all of these but will also continue through the remainder of the spelling patterns of long vowel sounds and will have studied all 72 phonograms, using them to read and spell hundreds of words. They will practice reading and writing sentences and learn about capitalization and punctuation. The books that will be read by Level 1 students this year will be phonetically-controlled to give students much needed practice in order to gain fluency and proficiency.
